Posted on 11/16/2008 7:51:38 PM by Nyki. - Writing Challenges
Sorry these are a day late: the downtime at the beginning of the month made it a little difficult to catch up. There was a very high standard this month, and a lot of stories were within reach of placing, but these are results the judges finally came up with.
1st Place: Bane of Text by writerguy Writerguy goes on an expedition across several genres to find the perfect story for the October Challenge!
2nd Place: Romeo Jones and the case of the necromantic nanny Welcome to the world of Romeo Jones, the world's only professional exterminator of the undead. He hates hauntings - and this is why.
3rd Place: The Death of Buri by tommygunn45 The struggle of two boys as their friendship is tested by outside forces. Pulled in different directions, the substance of each is laid bare.
Members Choice: When Wolf Met Jude by jas This is a really short tale of how two of my favorite characters met one another.....a cool October night, a masquerade and a little play on the rules of attraction. Hope you like.
Congratulations to all the winners.

The crown has been passed and November has a new Queen. Many thanks to Bowfinder for her interview of this months featured Member, Warriorchick.
Hello there, WC. For any FWO members who don’t already know you (and that means any who’ve been living underground for the past year), tell us a little about yourself.
Wow, where to start? I’m 23, from Oklahoma, have brown hair and blue eyes, am 5’3, and weigh...uh, well, you all don’t need to know about that. I come from a large family with 7 kids and more aunts, uncles, and cousins than you can shake a stick at. I’m the proud aunt of Robert, 2 months old; the proud great-aunt of John IV, 8 months old; and the adopted “auntie” of most of the little kids at church. (I love kids.) I’m a full-time, online college-student--and just got invited to join my second honor society! Along with my two sisters, I’m a homeschooling teacher, and have been for the past six years. My current “motivational” songs are Red High Heels (Kellie Pickler) and Mountains (Lonestar).

Posted on 11/1/2008 1:40:33 PM by Nyki. - Writing Challenges
This came out of the discussion of the forum, and it's a little different from usual. Your challenge this month is to write a "flash" story (ie no more than 1000 words). Since we're expecting a "flash flood", your story should in some way involve a flood - and you can interpret that as you wish.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.

1st Place: In the Water by Propheceer Flash fiction: man overboard...who will come to his rescue?
2nd Place: One Fleeting Moment by tommygunn45 Welcome to my first piece of flash (if it can be called such). It's an introspective short about an elf that has taken the plunge into undeath. What's more, it's in our world! Enjoy.
3rd Place: Bird Out of Water by Aiara An awkward hybrid of two apparently incompatible species, Vri longs for humanity. Be careful what you wish for ...
Members Choice (dead heat)
The Siren of Silence by Asenath A very short piece about a Siren that has lost her voice.
Djinn with Chaser by Erika A brief little fairy tale for this month's challenge, only 1600 words. Thanks to Harlan Ellison for the title idea.
Congratulations to the winners.

Join me please in celebrating our lovely Propheceer as our October Member of the Month. Congrats to you Proph, and many thanks to BlackMagic for conducting this months interview.
Take it away, BlackMagic
1. First of all, congratulations, Rhiannon, for being selected as this month's Featured Member. How does it feel to be the chosen one?
A bit strange actually. I'm not used to being the centre of attention (in fact I avoid it, if I can). Nice too though Thank you all!

It's October, the month of Halloween, and as is traditional this month's challenge has a Halloween theme. Just to be different, though, the theme this time is masks and costumes. This can be in connection with Halloween or not - it's up to you.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.

| August Writing Challenge Results |
 |
Posted on 9/21/2008 7:29:43 PM by Nyki. - Writing Challenges
Well, apologies for the lateness of this, due to my internet connection going on strike for a fortnight, but finally, here are the results of the August challenge. There's a tie for second place - just in case anyone isn't familiar, FW tradition is that we award a third place too.
First Place: Love Like a Shadow by Lion A fallen god has been stripped of his divinity, but he still remembers the sacred melodies, which grant him a measure of control over life and death. Three chapters.
Second Place: A capella by Stoneaxe G.K. Chesteron once said, "Art, like morality, consists of drawing a line somewhere." But who is to say which side of the line either art or morality will fall?
The Cleft Brothers by Madison Treble and Bass Cleft are two brothers who live in the land of Pianissimo and swear to rescue Princesses Harmony and Melody from the evil Unison, who lives in the far-away land of Forte.
Third Place: Masterpiece in a night by Asenath I wrote this piece a while back or else I wouldn't have an entry for this months challenge yet. A woman searches for meaning in her life.
Members Choice: Belle and Theodore by thefirefly Franki hears a piece of beautiful music, and is lead to the source in an unlikely way.
Congratulations to all the winners.
